Do you ever feel like you’re living a life that isn’t truly yours because you are trying to be what others want you to be? Perhaps you constantly strive to present a perfect image before you venture into a relationship or career. These behaviors often indicate that you’re overidentified with your Imposter Persona—a facade we wear to meet societal expectations instead of living authentically.

In my groundbreaking book, Become Who You Are Meant to Be in Your Personal Life, I outline six tell tale symptoms of being trapped in your Imposter Persona

1. Lack of Self-Awareness

You are so busy judging yourself and fearing others’ disapproval that you don’t see yourself for who you really are. This lack of self-awareness keeps you from recognizing your true strengths and potential.

2. Lack of Assertiveness

Struggling to express your thoughts, feelings, needs, or desires clearly and confidently is a sign of lacking assertiveness. This can manifest as passivity—avoiding conflict and failing to set boundaries—or as aggression, disregarding the feelings or rights of others.

3. Dependence on Others to Regulate Your Self-Esteem

When you rely on others to feel good about yourself, you constantly seek approval and recognition. This dependence undermines your self-confidence, causing persistent doubts about your abilities, appearance, and worth.

4. Deflecting Praise, Keeping Your Self-Esteem Low

Living from the Imposter Persona means seeking approval but being unable to accept it when it comes. Instead of graciously acknowledging praise, you might minimize your accomplishments or attribute success to external factors. This behavior reinforces feelings of inadequacy and perpetuates the belief that you are unworthy of recognition.

5. Neglecting Yourself, Putting Others First

Denial of pleasure and neglecting your well-being in favor of others’ needs is a hallmark of the Imposter Persona. This ingrained notion that your needs are less important can harm your quality of life and hinder your ability to recognize and celebrate your worth and successes.

6. Self-Sabotage Stops You Becoming Who You Are Meant to Be

Fear of failure, loss, abandonment, or being exposed as inadequate can lead to self-sabotaging behaviors. This includes telling yourself stories that cause you to doubt yourself and your abilities, deciding you really don’t want the things you have said you do, or undermining yourself to maintain a perceived sense of control. This habit keeps you safe but unfulfilled. Such patterns impede your progress and hinder your ability to thrive.
